Updated:2016-06-20 10:35:23 Mon
In ancient China, fans had a practical function, but could also be adorned with painting or calligraphy to become works of art. In addition, they were used as props in opera performances. Wangxingji Paper Fans began in 1875 and was named after its founder, Wang Xingzhai. The company’s most famous products are fans made of black paper and sandalwood. The result of quality materials and superb technique, the fans are known as “gems of Asian art” and, along with silk and Longjing tea, are referred to jointly as the “Three Finest Hangzhou Products.”

There’re 15 different types of Hangzhou fans, including black paper fan, sandalwood fan, white paper fan, ivory fan, lady’s silk fan, opera fan, travel fan, and children’s fan. Among all the fans, “San Xing (Three Stars) Brand” black paper fan is the most famous one. The craftsmanship and style arts of Wangxingji Fan Store integrate the delicate design and traditional skills of generations of craftsmen. From a small workshop making simple black paper fans to a “Fan Kingdom”, Wangxingji now has fans of 15 types, over 400 varieties, and over 3,000 patterns. Inheriting the culture and advancing with the times, all the craftsmen from generation to generation manage to carry forward the traditional fan crafts.
