Located in what had been the Southern Song ancient kiln district south of West Lake, China’s first ceramics museum built on an actual ancient kiln site was established in 1991. The Southern Song Imperial Kiln was founded by the Song empire after it moved its capital to Lin’an (modern Hangzhou). The lustrous, elegant celadon porcelain it produced was among the finest in ancient China. The museum displays excavated porcelain objects of the Southern Song Imperial Kiln and its ruins.

Southern Song Dynasty Guan Kiln Museum covers an area of 43,000m2, including 10,000m2 for exhibition pavilions. There is a pottery activity center inside where visitors can experience pottery making. Famous Kiln Inheritance Pavilion, Exhibition Hall of the History of Southern Song Dynasty and Leisure Pavilion are newly established. These pavilions not only significantly promote the quality of exhibition space, but offer ideal places for visitors to relax and entertainment. Southern Song Dynasty Guan Kiln Museum has become a new type of museum integrating collection, exhibition, education, research and leisure. It is now an indispensable cultural highlight of Hangzhou.
