The Hangzhou Public Bicycle program was started in 2008. Its original purpose was to solve the problem of short-distance traffic connections between city bus stations and people’s working and living locations. It has developed into the world’s largest free bicycle system, offering environment-friendly, short-distance transport, as well as leisure and fitness. Currently 84,100 bicycles are available at 3,531 rental stations. The average daily turnover is five rides for each bike, more than 96% of the rides are free, and 310,000 rider trips cover a total of more than 700,000 kilometers per day on average. In 2011, the BBC described Hangzhou as one of the “eight great cities for public bicycle programs.”

You can find a public bicycle service station every 300m in Hangzhou. In total there are two hundred 24-hour service stations throughout the city. Citizens can rent or return bicycles until 24:00 in main urban area in any service station nearby.

Hangzhou Public Bicycle Company has launched service stations “built by the community and the company”. Personnel from community can independently manage the public bicycle service station and meanwhile help maintain the renting and returning condition, which not only solves the employment problems in communities, but performs social responsibility of companies. This mode will be popularized in the cooperation with enterprises and public institutions.

Meanwhile, public bicycle system is also internet-connected to build “PT Query” service module and enable “Micro Customer Service” function so that citizens and tourists can check the condition of nearby service stations, inquire personal state of bicycle renting and returning, and report missing bicycles in an easier way.
