Updated:2016-06-20 14:35:41 Mon
This historic block is situated on the west side of the Gongchen Bridge, which marks the southern terminus of the Grand Canal. In the 19th century, this area served as a wharf for shipping and a hub for commerce and trade. From the 1950s to the 1980s, it was Hangzhou’s industrial base. Restored in 2013, it has preserved traditional dwelling houses built in the local style, as well as the ruins of ancient workshops. The introduction of some modern cultural and commercial components has transformed this block into a welcoming area for people to live, do business, have fun, and see the sights. The West (Gongchen) Bridge Historic Culture Block was named for its location on the west bank of Gongchen Bridge. The block covers an area of 72.9 thousand square meters. As early as Tongzhi Period of Qing Dynasty, this area has become a prosperous ferry terminal in Gongchen Bridge district. There still preserves the most complete residential buildings of styles in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China along the river and a large number of modern industrial heritages in the block.
The block retains a large number of traditional residential buildings, including homes and wharfs along the river, traditional houses with courtyard, street structures in the Republic of China era, "simple housing" in the 1950s and 1960s, tube-shaped apartments in the 1980s, as well as rich historical relics like the traditional architecture since the Song Dynasty.
