Zhejiang Tradition of Guqin
“Qin, Chess, Calligraphy, and Painting” were the four pastimes of ancient Chinese literati. Qin refers to the guqin, the earliest Han Chinese stringed musical instrument or Chinese zither, which dates back 3,000 years and is a symbol of traditional Chinese culture. The Zhejiang Tradition hands down one of the oldest Chinese guqin artistic techniques, which features a refined and dignified style. In 2010 it was included in the UNESCO Rep-resentative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The style of Guqin playing of Zhejiang School belongs to Wuyue system. It originated in Hangzhou, and then spread all over Zhejiang and even reached to Shanghai. With smooth fingering and tight rhythm, it pursues tone of “rare sound” which is small, subtle, smooth and fluent, and artistic stage which is clear, tiny, light and distant. GUO Mian, famous Guqin Player in Southern Song Dynasty, created Guqin Art of Zhejiang School. His ancestral home was in Yongjia, Zhejiang. He wrote his classic compositions such as Xiao Xiang Shui Yun, Fan Cang Lang and Qiu Hong with his superb artistic attainments based on his unique understanding of Guqin and deep concern to the country in stake, and thus laid the foundation of Guqin Art of Zhejiang School.
