Qiantang River
Pagoda of Six Harmonies
The Pagoda of Six Harmonies (Liuhe Pagoda) is located on Yuelun Hill next to the Qiantang River. Begun in 970, the pagoda was built by Buddhist masters Yanshou and Zanning of the king-dom of Wuyue. Intended to stop the Qiantang River tidal bore, the pagoda was named after the six harmonies of Buddhism and was meant to inspire harmonious co-existence. The brick and wood structure stands 59.89 meters high and is heavily adorned with eaves. The interior of the pagoda has seven levels, which make it a popular venue to observe the Qiantang River tidal bore. Reconstructed multiple times over the centuries, the current tower-style wooden structure was built in 1990.

Being 3.8km to the south of the southern bank of the West Lake, Six Harmonies Pagoda covers an area of 1,363m2, and has a height of 59.89m. The plane of this 13-storey (in the appearance) pagoda is octangle. Although current Six Harmonies Pagoda is a little bit smaller after renovation compared with the original one, it is now much more exquisite and solid. Every Chinese New Year’s Eve, Hangzhou citizens will come here to toll the bell, pray for families and friends and make wishes for the coming year.
