Guozhuang Villa
Updated:2016-06-18 11:17:06 Sat
Guozhuang Villa, also known as “Fenyang Villa,” was built in 1907 by a silk merchant Song Duanfu on the west side of West Lake during the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). A pavilion overlooks a pond on the grounds of the villa, which also boasts a dock and an ornamental rock garden. The villa is divided into two sections: the residence, which is called “Living in Quietness,” and the gardens, which are called “Sky in the Mirror.” This design was typical of private residences built in the south-of-Yangtze style.

Pavilions are built along the stream. Besides, there are docks and rockeries in the garden. Guo Zhuang covers an area of 9,788m2, including near 3,000 m2 of water surface and 1,629m2 of gross architectural area. It is divided into two parts: Jing Bi Ju and Yi Jing Tian Kai. With elegant and antique interior furnishings, Jing Bi Ju is the residence part where the hosts live and meet guests. While Yi Jing Tian Kai is the garden part with zigzag corridors, bridges, streams, rockeries and plants. Scenic spots such as Xiang Xue Fen Chun, Cheng Feng Yao Yue, Liang Yi Xuan, Shang Xin Yue Mu, Jing Su Ge, and Ru Mu Chun Feng are scattered along the pond elegantly. It is a typical private garden of Zhejiang School.
