Huqingyutang Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine

This specialized museum of traditional Chinese medicine is located on Dajing Alley in Hangzhou. It was originally founded in 1874 as the Huqingyutang Pharmaceutical Work - shop, and enjoyed equal fame with Beijing’s Tongrentang. The founder was Hu Xueyan (1823-1885), the “King of Medicine South of the Yangtze.” He earned widespread fame by instructing that “fraud is forbidden,” and his honest business practice of “genuine medicine at unchanged prices.”

The museum was established in 1989 on the original workshop site and is protected as a Chinese national key cultural relic. It is open to the public, but still functions as a pharmacy and remains important to demonstrating and passing on the traditional Chinese medicine cultural heritage.

The ancient architecture of HuqingYutang Pharmacy at the northern foot of Wushan Mountain is the first domestic traditional Chinese medicine museum, as well as the national key cultural relic protection unit. It shows unripe brightness after being repaired recently. The inside exhibitions have introduced the origin, form, development and application of traditional Chinese medicine, and also shown the operation way of “deceit quit” and “integrity” in HuqingYutang Pharmacy. The HuqingYutang Pharmacy shows to the people not only the knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine but also the Chinese traditional culture in the long history.
