Updated:2016-06-20 16:15:08 Mon
Formerly known as Huiyin Buddhist Temple, Huiyin Gaoli (Korean) Temple is situated between Chishan Port and Yucen Hill on the west side of West Lake. Founded in 927, the temple derives its name from a Korean prince, who became a patron to the temple after travelling there to study Buddhism in 1085. The temple is a reminder of the early cultural interactions between China and Korea. Between the 10th and 14th centuries, the temple went through multiple cycles of destruction and reconstruction until the late 19th century, when the structure finally ceased to exist. In 2004, it was reconstructed in the style of the Tang and Song dynasties (10th- 14th centuries) according to an ancient painting. The temple now houses the world’s tallest revolving sutra repository, which is 13.5 meters high, meticulously crafted completely from Phoebe Zhennan wood, and adorned with gold leaf.

Located between Chishan Port and Yucen Mountain, Huiyin Goryeo Temple is a featured scenic spot keynoted in religious culture. In the eighth year of Yuanfeng Period in Northern Song Dynasty, Yitian, the fourth son of WANG Hui (Emperor Wenzong of Goryeo), went all the way across the ocean for Buddha dharma. He arrived in Hangzhou and stayed at Huiyin Academy following Master Jingyuan. After returning home, Yitian gave 170 sutras, including three volumes of Avatamsaka Sutra, to Huiyin Temple. Besides, he donated 2000 liang platinum to build Repository of Avatamsaka Sutra and Buddhas in the temple. Huiyin Goryeo Temple hence became famous and was honored as “No.1 Ashram of Avatamsaka”. The temple was renovated according to “Diagram of Ancient Goryeo Temple”. It covers an area of 15,000m2, including 2,500m2 of gross architectural area. This Song-style temple has lots of unique highlights, such as Lun Zang Hall, specially-shaped Four Heavenly Kings, Buddhas and frescoes. You can’t miss the “Zhuan Lun Zang (Rotatable Archive)” in Lun Zang Hall. In order to enhance the friendly communication and exchange between China and Korea, and to pray for the peace and unification, this famous historical temple was rebuilt in 2007.
