Thunder Peak Pagoda
The Thunder Peak (Leifeng) Pagoda is situated on Thunder Peak, the highest point of Sunset (Xizhao) Hill on the south bank of West Lake. The pagoda was built in 975 by King Qian of Wuyue as a way to bring peace and prosperity to the kingdom. According to the Legend of the White Snake, the Buddhist monk Fahai imprisoned the White Maiden under the pagoda. The current structure was built in 2002 to replace the original pagoda, which collapsed in 1924. The ruins of the old structure are preserved within the new pagoda. This design, which allows visitors to view the old ruins, is a model of historic preservation in China. The Sunset Hill’s Thunder Peak Pagoda is one of the ten scenic views of West Lake.

71m-high Leifeng Pagoda has five sides and eight storeys. Embraced by mountains and waters, Leifeng Pagoda is a beautiful sight beside the West Lake. In order to well protect the precious underground relics, glass ceilings are installed. In this way, the old was reborn inside of the new, and the new enhances the charm of the old. This is the first case of original-site protection of ancient pagoda in China. The beauty of Leifeng Pagoda in the Sunset thus is back to the world.
