Kuahuqiao Culture Site
The Kuahuqiao culture site, from which this early Neolithic culture got its name, is located in the Xiaoshan District’s Xianghu Village. A dugout canoe and lacquer artifacts that were excavated from the site are believed to be the oldest in existence. Their discovery provided concrete evidence that civilization has existed in Hangzhou for at least 8,000 years.

Cross-lake Bridge Cultural Relics is the relics in the early stage of the transformation from Mountain Culture to Plain Culture. Three archaeological excavations have been launched since the first excavation in June 1990. The canoe and related relics discovered in 2002 have a history of 7,000 – 8000 years according to measurement, proving the canoe to be the oldest one found around the world. Cross-lake Bridge Canoe, honored as “the first canoe around the world”, is now lying in the relics hall 6.5m under Xianghu Lake so as to protect it in the original site.
