Liangzhu Culture Site
Settled 5,300 to 4,500 years ago, the Liangzhu culture site is located in the northern part of the city’s Yuhang District. The large quantity of jade objects unearthed from the site is considered the earliest “DNA” of Chinese culture. The ancient city, which covers an area of more than 2.9 million square meters, is the largest and most architecturally advanced example of a city from this period in Chinese history. This level of complexity suggests that Liangzhu Culture had reached an advanced stage of development for a prehistoric civilization. In 2016, archaeologists discovered evidence of an extensive water conservancy project outside the ancient city. They believe it was the oldest and largest system of its kind in the ancient world.

The museum covers an area of 40,000m2, including 10,000m2 of architectural area and 4,000m2 of exhibition area. Inside the museum, there’re 3 regular exhibition halls (separately exhibiting “Discover and Pursue the Truth”, “Liangzhu Ancient State” and “Liangzhu Culture”), 1 temporary exhibition hall, and other functional blocks such as dedicated warehouse for cultural relics and public leisure facilities.
