Phoenix Mosque
Located on Hangzhou’s Middle Zhongshan Road, the Phoenix Mosque is one of the four oldest Islamic mosques in China’s coastal areas. It is the center of Islamic worship in Hangzhou. Founded during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the mosque was rebuilt in 1281 by the Persian ‘Ala’ al-Din (?-1313), and then rebuilt again in mid-17th century. The name of the mosque was derived from its structure, which resembles a phoenix with spread wings. The main hall was designed with touches of south-of-Yangtze style. The prayer hall dome was built during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and features a beamless design. ‘Ala’ al-Din’s tombstone is housed within the mosque.

Hangzhou Phoenix Mosque (Fenghuang Mosque) was built during Zhenguan Period (627 - 649) in Tang Dynasty. It is one of the four oldest mosques in the coastal areas of China. The other three are Crane Mosque (Xianhe Mosque) in Yangzhou, Kylin Mosque (Qingjing Mosque) in Quanzhou and Lion Mosque (Huaisheng Mosque) in Guangzhou. The existing stone lectern and plinth stone in the hall are the relics of Song Dynasty according to the identification of cultural heritage sector. Phoenix Mosque was listed as a provincial level major historical and cultural site by the provincial government on 15th April, 1961, and was then listed as a national level major historical and cultural site in 2001.

Being the major site to hold Islamic religious festivals and activities, Phoenix Mosque covers an area of 3,300m2, including 1,370 m2 of architectural area and 570 m2 of worship hall. Supporting facilities such as water room and mortuary are also included.
