Hangzhou Woodblock Printing Technique

Woodblock printing in Hangzhou dates back to the late Sui Dynasty (early 7th century).During the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties (10th to 13th centuries), Hangzhou woodblock printing ranked first in China in terms of both volume and quality.

The woodblock printing technique involves carving text or images in reverse into a wooden block, brushing ink onto it to create a printing plate, applying it to paper, and adding pressure, thereby transferring the printing plate graphic onto the paper. In 2011, the Hangzhou woodblock printing technique was recognized as a Chinese National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
