West Lake Smiling Volunteer Kiosk
In August 2010, the first volunteer-run tourist information and public service kiosk appeared at Hangzhou’s West Lake. The volunteers always have a smile on their faces, so the structure they work in is known to the public as the West Lake Smiling Volunteer Kiosk. It offers ten free items and services to visitors, including tourist maps, first-aid kits, sewing kits, umbrellas, and wheelchairs. The volunteers sometimes provide complimentary herbal tea, steamed buns, and hot rice congee.

A fixed pavilion where the volunteers by West Lake of Hangzhou provide travel consultation and public service. At present, on the basis of Smile Pavilion of Orioles Singing in the Willows and Smile Pavilion of Spring Dawn at Su Causeway, around the West Lake, 6 more smile pavilions including that of Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard, Leifeng Pagoda in the Sunset, Sunny and Rainy Lakeside and Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake are successively opened.

While the tourists still take delight in talking about “A smiling face, a greeting, a medicine cabinet, a sewing kit, a brochure, a convenience paper,, a tourist map, a comment book, a inflator, an umbrella for public benefit, a wheelchair”, the volunteers in Hangzhou have already made preparations for new service items. The welfare and benefaction to people include flower seeds in the Tree-Planting Day, rice dumpling in the Dragon Boat Festival, Eight Treasure Porridge in the Laba Festival, and free blood pressure measurement and explanation of traditional Chinese medicine on two-day weekend and in golden week. Even a small service manual is made into more than 10 editions with different emphasis of contents according to different requirements of tourists.
