Xiaoying Alley Community
The historic Xiaoying Alley is near Hangzhou’s Mashi Street. Its residents became famous for their public hygiene work in the mid-20th century. In 1958, Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China, visited the community and praised their work.
The Xiaoying Alley Community is renowned in China for taking the initiative in patriotic public health campaigns. They have developed a healthy community by eliminating the “four harmful pests” of earlier days (flies, mosquitoes, rats, and cockroaches), and controlling the “four harms” of today (air pollution, water pollution, overflowing garbage, and illegal construction). They have engaged in comprehensive environmental restoration and universal health education. In 1991, the community became a point of contact in the Asia-Pacific Region for the World Health Organization. The Xiaoying Sub-district, well-known for “Red” in the country, possesses numerous patriotism and revolutionary tradition education bases including Memorial Hall for Chairman Mao’s Inspecting Xiaoying Lane, Memorial Hall of Hangzhou Group of the CPC and Former Residence of Qian Xuesen, etc. Xiaoying Lane Community, located in the northeast corner of Shangcheng District of Hangzhou, possesses abundant historic culture relics with talents gathering and harmonious neighborhood. In 5th January, 1958, Chairman Mao made his personal appearance to inspect Xiaoying Lane and thus the upsurge of patriotic health campaign was initiated.
